Achieving Fairness in Wireless LANs by Enhanced 802.11 DCF

چکیده
Over the past few years, Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) have gained an increased attention and a large number of WLANs are being deployed in universities, companies, airports etc. Majority of the IEEE 802.11 based WLANs employ Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) in Wireless Access Points (AP) to arbitrate the wireless channel among Wireless Stations (STAs). However, DCF poses serious unfairness problem between uplink and downlink flows. To overcome this unfairness problem, we propose a simple enhancement to the IEEE 802.11 DCF which provides priority to the AP and thus enables it to acquire a larger share of the channel when required. We have demonstrated the unfairness problem through systematic measurements in an experimental test bed of WLAN using the legacy 802.11 DCF. We also developed analytical models to calculate the throughput of AP and the STAs and verify these results through thorough simulations in ns-2. We observe that our simulation results find in good agreement with our analytical models. Results show that our proposed enhancement achieves a fair distribution of bandwidth and improves the throughput (by nearly 300%) and reduces the delay (by nearly 60%) for the downlink flows as compared to the DCF, without severely affecting the performance of uplink flows.

A Novel Proportional Fairness Criterion for Throughput Allocation in Multirate IEEE 802.11
This paper focuses on multirate IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN employing the mandatory Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) option. Its aim is threefold. Upon starting from the multi-dimensional Markovian state transition model proposed by Malone et.al. for characterizing the behavior of the IEEE 802.11 protocol at the Medium Access Control layer, it presents an extension accounting for packet tra...
متن کاملAchieving Efficient Channel Utilization and Weighted Fairness for Data Communications in IEEE 802.11 WLAN under the DCF
Fair allocation of bandwidth and maximization of channel utilization are two important issues when designing a contention-based wireless medium access control (MAC) protocol. However, achieving both design goals at the same time is very difficult, and has not yet been addressed elsewhere. In this paper, we study this challenging problem, particularly for data communications in IEEE 802.11 wirel...
متن کامل802.11 DCF Denial of Service Vulnerabilities
Abstract This paper addresses denial of service vulnerabilities (DOS) in 802.11 wireless LANs that arise from the 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF). We demonstrate that the DCF is vulnerable to equivalent DOS attacks at both the MAC and PHY layers. Denial of service attacks against the DCF are easily staged by a single adversary and affect both infrastructure and mobile ad hoc netw...
متن کاملImproving the Aggregate Throughput of Access Points in IEEE 802.11 Wireless LANs
In IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs, the DCF access method and the PCF access method operate alternatively within a superframe to service the time-varying traffic demands. Due to different medium access mechanisms deployed by DCF and PCF, they work well for some particular types of traffic scenarios respectively, while their performance may degrade under some other types of traffic demands. None of th...
متن کاملEvaluating Wireless LAN Access Methods in Presence of Transmission Errors
Several modifications of the IEEE 802.11 DCF access method have been proposed recently to improve the performance of wireless LANs. Up to now, such proposals have only been compared under ideal channel conditions. In this paper, we evaluate the impact of transmission errors on their performance in terms of aggregate throughput and fairness.
